Activities » Residential school for SC/ST children By

The school is one of the core activities of Mitraniketan. Our students hail from all over Kerala, especially from Wayanad. The school provides not only education, but also board and lodging, clothing, and other day-to-day needs to these rural and tribal children. Tribal children, SC children and destitutes form the major part of the student community living and studying in Mitraniketan Vikas Bhavan High School. The open class rooms, playing facilities, natural environment, and opportunities for interacting with international volunteers and development workers, in addition to the class room education promote the students for a free learning without compulsion.

The students come from remote tribal villages, where people are still unable to take advantage of the benefits of education or development that took place in the state. Due to generations of exploitation and isolation they still cannot reach the main stream of education as other people. Majority of the other members of the tribal community still depend on farming and land lords for their livelihood. This continued dependence, generation after generation has hindered their sustainable development through education. Mitraniketan understands that the real need of the community is not just surviving through some sort of livelihood or by depending on others, but being helped by giving an appropriate education leading to sustainable development of the community.

Mitraniketan School aims to empower children through an alternative system of education which integrates need based practical knowledge with a formal academic stream of learning. The school has several achievements in the field of arts, sports etc., under the guidance and service of expert teachers. In addition to academic training, the senior students are trained in craft skills in the evening with the intention to create interest and developing livelihood skills for employment. The craft skills include Tailoring and embroidery, Carpentry, Shoulder bag making, Electrical, Mushroom cultivation, Fruit processing, Coir mat weaving, Agarbathi, Soap, Candle, and Umbrella making.  Furthermore, they are also trained in Computer Application and Agriculture. Music, instrumental music, dancing, painting, and other related traditional art activities are also an integral part of the education programme in the school. A team of 21 teachers and a small group of volunteers take care of the teaching part.
